LOCAL CHIC FILES 2017: Regal Clothes

Imagine having the opportunity to be immersed in fashion in three different countries ranging from the African soil of Ghana to Montreal, Canada to Paris, France. For Akos Regal, this wasn’t imaginative, it was her reality.

“In Ghana, the traditional ladies wear a two piece outfit consists of the kaba (blouse/top) and slit (fitted skirt),” Regal said. It is common to have Kaba outfit competitions at prominent events and all the ladies are fierce in their creativity. My mother always stated that every fashion mistake in Ghana was a new style in London. She was bold in her fusion of our cultural designs with tailored western suits and always sported her signature turban. Classically elegant is breathtaking in every culture.”

Having an eye for detail and enjoying taking clothes a part to create a new item, Akos started her own clothing line, Regal Clothes, reflecting her culture mélange. With the help of her partner William, they create ankara, dashiki and tribal print clothes as well as accessories influenced by fabrics and themes.

“We have incorporated more clothing and accessories into our line to make it a comprehensive line,” Akos said. However, my first love remains turbans and ornate head wear. [The first piece I created for Regal Clothes was] a line of ornate mixed print head wraps that were used in an international fashion show. The designer was an evening wear creator and the head wraps were truly gorgeous.”

In 2017, the Regal Clothes designer is organizing a traveling pop up shop for spring and summer in order to meet more fashionistas face to face. Also, she is currently on the search for brand ambassadors.

“We are looking for sassy, saucy and classy brand ambassadors in standard and curvy sizes to be the #RegalBabe, face of Regal Clothes,” Regal said. This is going to be a fun project. We are so excited! The Regal Clothes Brand Ambassador search is on.”
