DEVIATED THEATRE combines original fairytale screenplays that come to life through a mix of acting, contemporary dance, and aerial dance.
“We draw attention to what lingers in our social subconscious, and highlight the tension between fate and destiny, light and shadow, and also what is considered ugly or beautiful. We invite our audiences to journey from their ordinary sleeping state, to ponder humanity’s role as both creature and creator amidst the greater cosmos.” -Kimmie Dobbs Chan
What inspired you to be a part of Raw Baltimore?
We had heard a lot of recommendations from our peers to check out RAW, and we had come across RAW online as well. It caught our eye, as we consider ourselves raw, untamed, individuating artists. Finally the timing was right, and we were able to apply and jump onboard.
What was the highlight of your Raw Baltimore experience?
I hope this doesn’t sound awful, but to be completely honest the highlight this far was the surprise of being chosen in the top 5, and then top 3. We had a busy October, preparing for auditions, our KICKSTARTER campaign [runs tip Dec. 13th: http://kck.st/HHDKWh], and we were working with our smallest team to date [4 dancers compared to the dozen or more we have come big production time].
Therefore to embrace a period of drawing back before a big leap, so to speak, we did not spend our energies publicize the RAW voting in October. We were not expecting to be included at all. Somehow to have been nominated was a huge surprise! Who voted for us? To have received such a warm reception by anonymous voters is utterly magical. It refreshes the soul. What more could an artist ask for? Especially amidst those dark transitive stretches we were experiencing at the time.
What would winning a RAWard mean to you? Why?
Winning a RAWard would be an honor to us. We value the RAW purpose, and recognition by this community would be like being welcomed into a new family. Not just like coming over for pizza… but more like being welcomed in for the big holidays, when you know you are merging with an ongoing legacy.
What are your plans for 2014?
In 2014 we plan to finish creating our newest evening length production, “creature”. We have a KICKSTARTER campaign going on now [ends Dec. 13th http://kck.st/HHDKWh] and will be presenting a preview on February 28th for Atlas INTERSECTIONS Festival.
We will also be journeying to NYC sometime in the summer to perform for The Breaking Glass Project [dates tbd] www.elscodance.org/breakingglass. Our new show will involve aerial dance on lyra, power stilts, contemporary dance, and acting and takes place in a post apocalyptic world. Once our show is created we’re looking for opportunities to link up with additional producers and presenters. Longer term goals include looking to branch out with master classes, intensives, guest choreography opportunities, and we would even be interested to break into the corporate entertainment industry. The search is for growth and sustainability.
