It is easy to fall in love with the world of beauty. You can test your make-up skills on your friends. You can learn make-up trends and techniques through classes. You can become licensed and work for M.A.C. cosmetics. This is exactly how Jalea Dodson started her career as an esthetican and make-up artist.
“I’ve always loved the vibe of the beauty salon,” Dodson said. Women chatting it up while getting their hair and nails done. [There are] shampoo girls hustling and bustling around the salon between clients. Seeing the before and after looks of clients as they go in and out of the salon. I knew I had to find a way to work in that environment. As my clientele grew and clients always asked how they would touch up their lips after a makeover. I decided I would brand my own makeup line instead of sending them to other beauty counters. Lip Smack was created in December 2011.”
With the introduction of The Lip Smack brand, Jspot beauty is evolving into a household name in Charm City.
“Lip Smack is a lifestyle brand that encourages women to step out of their “makeup” comfort zone and try something new such as Color,” Dodson said. We started with just lip glosses and have since expanded to “Lipstixx”, lip liners, brow and eye makeup.”
Since 2011, Lip Smack has transition from six shades of gloss to 12 shades. Last year, she added 13 lipsticks, 6 lip liners, mascara and eyeliner to her line. During the 2012 Holidays season, Jalea created Lip Smack gift sets and eyeshadow pallets for her clients.
Jspot Beauty is the company. Jspot Beauty provides brow artistry such waxing, trimming and tweezing as hair removal methods. Lip Smack is brand. It provides glosses and lipstixx with a hint of intense color.
Jalea believes in a flawless face as much as giving back to the community. In the past, Jspot Beauty has sponsored Kiss Cancer Goodbye fundraiser with Dejuan DHov Events Team. She organized a team to participate in the Making Strides for Breast Cancer Walk, raising awareness and funds for breast cancer. The beauty maven donated a portion of their PINK Lip Smack/Lipstixx sales to Susan G. Komen for Breast Cancer Awareness.
“I am self-driven and self-motivated,” Dodson said. I take ‘no’ for an answer and later figure out a way to do it anyway. I love what I do and will continue to do it as long as I am blessed to do so.”
Beauty Extra (Favorite Beauty Trend 2013): “All beauty trends repeat themselves, but the no
makeup-makeup look: minimal foundation, a touch of blush or bronzer and mascara
with a pop of color on the lips is my fave,” Dodson said. It’s sweet, simple with a touch of wow.”
