Who says you can only have one career? Julie Ter Borg is a scientist by trade and has a successful jewelry line, Julie Ellyn Design.
Usually, her days involve taking care of her two small children, working as a consulting scientist, being attached to her Blackberry and having late night sessions to focus on creating her artisan jewelry.
It was around five years ago that the Maryland based accessory designer decided to become a small fashion business owner.
“I started designing jewelry as a hobby and stress release from my hectic job as a research scientist and consultant,”Ter Borg said. I really enjoyed the creative process and gifting handmade items to my friends and family. When my bead stash started to become overwhelming, my husband encouraged me to start selling my designs. Never did I dream that I would have the level of success that I have reached so far.”
Her etsy shop, Julie Ellyn Designs features earrings to large statement bracelets with a feminine touch using high quality gemstones, gold, sterling silver, and fresh water cultured pearls. Also, she specializes in custom design and bridal jewelry requests. Often Julie’s jewelry designs are inspired by two important people in her life.
“My newest fans and inspiration, are my two little girls,” Ter Borg said. They love to model my jewelry and are always providing suggestions on what I should make next. I even receive draft sketches from my darling 6 year old. I have two budding artists on my hands. I used to love working out and being outside on the farm, but honestly my favorite times now are creating jewelry while chatting with my little girls and having my rescue pup keeping my feet warm. I am in heaven.”
Besides being inspired by her little ones, she stays on top of trends and makes new designs for every season.
“Color trends change and the focus of jewelry changes [earrings vs. bracelets, etc.] so I need to keep an eye on what people are wearing,” Ter Borg said. If that means watching the Style network or reading People Magazine to track celebrities so be it. A little perk of the profession.”
Julie Ellyn Designs has been a part of The Artisans Group’s Primetime Emmy’s gift lounge and Oscars’ gift lounge. Her jewelry has been spotted on celebrities like Camilla Luddington, Joey Lawrence and Brandi Glanville.
“My best career defining moment was having a piece of my jewelry selected to be worn by the main character of the CW’s hit series ‘The Vampire Diaries,’ ” Ter Borg said. I have to admit that I am a fan of the show, so it made it an even sweeter success. TVD fans are amazing and have shown such support of my bracelet design. Elena Gilbert, played by the stunning Nina Dobrev, wore the bracelet in two episodes this season.”
With all of her success, Julie still remains humble about her Maryland based jewelry business.
“There are so many talented artists out there, especially in the avenue in which I sell my designs [Etsy.com],” Ter Borg said. I just try and stay true to myself and design pieces that I would like to wear.”
Julie Ter Borg’s Tips for Aspiring Jewelry Designers
- Of course, you need to enjoy what you do; it should not be “work.”
- Make things that you would wear.
- Constantly drive to grow in your art and in your skill set. I am saving up to buy a kiln so I can start molding and firing my own sterling forms/charms.
